Today, an English lab-mate make a joke about my mom, something which in Mexico is really offensive and apparently here it’s  kind of usual – well, at least according with my colleague. Culturally,  for Mexicans one of the most important thing in life is their mothers. This position has its origins on veneration of the Virgin Mary due to the Roman Catholic background imposed for the invader conquer Spaniards more than 500 years ago. Did I get offended? Not really, this is just an example of culture shock that might be useful to be  aware of when you are socializing abroad.

A curious aspect of this social value is the mix of Roman Catholic and pre-hispanic religious beliefs. The Virgin of Guadalupe is the most important representation and a clear example of this mixed beliefs due to its complex and enigmatic symbolism.
